At Henley Garden Buildings, we create bespoke outdoor spaces that do more than just add value—they transform the way people live. When Claire and Jules approached us with their vision for a multi-functional garden room in Alcester, Warwickshire, we were thrilled to be part of a truly unique project.
Their chosen site lay within an area of historical significance, and while they had already secured planning permission, the challenge was to carefully navigate the added complexity of working with Historic England and Warwickshire Archaeology.
Preserving the Past, Building for the Future
After a thoughtful consultation, we submitted two build proposals to Historic England—both focused on ground preservation and sustainable design. These were crafted to minimise disturbance to the medieval remains beneath the site, while still allowing for a beautiful and practical build. The proposals were quickly approved, giving us the green light to proceed.
Studio Size: 5.7m x 2.7m with a 90cm Step and Canopy
The finished structure—a Studio measuring 5.7m x 2.7m—was built as a multi-functional garden room to serve both as a calm, remote home office and a peaceful chill-out space.
To maximise its elevated position and stunning panoramic countryside views, we incorporated:
- A 3.6m-wide glazed front opening to flood the space with natural light
- Top-hinged rear windows overlooking ancient woodland
- A striking aluminium picture window framed in oak to capture the view perfectly
These elements were carefully chosen to frame the surrounding landscape, seamlessly blending the indoors with the beauty of Alcester’s rolling scenery.
Thoughtful Exterior Design & Materials
The garden room’s exterior was clad in elegant vertical Argent panels, paired with a generous 90cm Spiced Oak composite decking step that leads into the room. This detail was echoed above with a 90cm overhanging canopy in slatted Spiced Oak cladding, creating a cohesive and architectural finish.
A Calm and Natural Interior
Inside, the finishes were chosen to complement the peaceful surroundings:
- Feature walls painted in Grey Oak by Neptune
- Remaining walls in Driftwood for softness and warmth
- Quick-Step Largo flooring in Vintage Grey Oak Flooring, tying the palette together with a rustic yet refined look
This tranquil environment makes the space ideal for work, wellness, or relaxation—everything a multi-functional garden room should be.
Flexible Living at Its Best
Designed to be more than just an office or retreat, this garden studio is a perfect example of multifunctional living. It offers:
- A quiet, focused workspace during the day
- A peaceful lounge or creative space after hours
- Long-term adaptability for hobbies, reading, or even occasional overnight guests
